Our pastor, John Vieths, grew up in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1987 he graduated from Northwestern College in Watertown, WI with a BA in Liberal Arts. He attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI and graduated with an M. Div. in 1991. He did his intern work as a vicar at Sola Fide Lutheran Church in Lawrenceville, GA. During his seminary years he also worked as an evangelist in the inner city of Milwaukee, WI. There he helped to found Northside Lutheran Ministry.
Pastor Vieths is married to Robin (nee Karrick), who manages a restaurant in Oklahoma City. They have four adult children—a daughter and three sons. Robin spent many years as a fulltime homemaker. For two years before moving to Norman she had worked at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Dallas as a special education teacher’s assistant.
Before coming to Norman, Pastor Vieths served Calvary Lutheran in Dallas, TX for 23 years. In addition to his pastoral duties Pastor Vieths has served the South Central District of the Wisconsin Synod as a member of the Evangelism Commission, chairman of the District Constitution Committee, and circuit pastor for the DFW Circuit. From 2002 until 2013 he was a member of the WELS Commission on Inter-Church Relations. As a member of that commission he was a liaison with Lutheran churches in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.
Currently Pastor Vieths is the First Vice-President of the South Central District. He holds memberships on the Scripture Committee for the WELS Hymnal which will be published in 2024, the Synod’s Board of Appeals, and the Commission on Adult Discipleship.
Pastor Vieths and his family moved to Norman in 2014. He is the first full-time, resident pastor for Grace Lutheran. Since moving to Norman he has been involved with organizations serving the autism community, the Norman Chamber of Commerce, the Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board, and is active in the property owners association in his neighborhood.
